Title: Procedures for Enjoying Ikebana Therapy
Presenter: Dr Eiko Hamasaki
Ph.D. Social Innovation Doshisha University, Ikebana Artist, Psychologist (Japanese national certification), President of the Institute of Flower Psychology Japanese, & Vice President of the Japanese Society of Ikebana Therapy.
I am an Ikebana practitioner and psychologist and has developed various programs that combine Ikebana with psychology.
I have presented my research outcomes on ikebana therapy at numerous conferences, including the International Conference of the International Alzheimer's Association, the Japanese Society for Dementia Care, the Japan Wellness Society, and the Japanese Society for Social Innovation.
I have also conducted interdisciplinary research on the effectiveness of ikebana therapy and applied the research to resolve social problems, earning a doctoral degree from Doshisha University.
I hope to apply the results of my research not only in Japan but also abroad to promote ikebana's potential in the fields of medicine, welfare, and education.
Through this research and practice, I and my Institute have provided care for various marginalized groups and helped improve their quality of life.
In 2017, we received the Yomiuri Welfare Cultural Award from the Yomiuri Shimbun, a major Japanese media outlet.
We would like many people to see how a single flower can lead to a richer life for everyone.

Abstract :
The most important aspect of non-pharmacological dementia care is that the participants find it enjoyable.
One of the reasons for this is that, when practiced on an ongoing basis, it can be effective in alleviating the symptoms of dementia and slowing its progression.
Ikebana has spread throughout the world in the style of belonging to a certain school and learning in a classroom. In many classrooms, students learn in a style that imitates a model.
In this study, we will examine the process of ikebana creation with the aim of following a model, as well as the process of creating ikebana without using a model.
This experiment was conducted with 20 university students who had no experience with ikebana.
Through questionnaires and observations, we investigated the differences in feelings and ideas among university students. Based on the results, we have developed an ikebana therapy procedure that elicits enjoyment and the desire to do more.
